Introduction

Cretaquarium, located in Gournes village near Heraklion on the Greek island of Crete, is one of the largest marine aquariums in Greece. It was originally established as the CRETAquarium research institute on the site of a former United States Air Force base. The facility showcases over 2000 marine species from the Mediterranean and global waters, including sharks, sea turtles, vibrantly colored coral reef fish, and bizarre deep-sea creatures. Themed around the recreation of Mediterranean marine ecosystems, the aquarium features a 9-meter-long viewing tunnel where visitors can enjoy a fully immersive 360-degree experience watching shoals of fish swimming overhead. It is an ideal destination for family trips and marine science education, offering interactive exhibits, feeding demonstrations, and educational programs that highlight the importance of ocean conservation and biodiversity in the Mediterranean basin.
