Introduction
Hraunfossar, the lava falls, is a chain of many small cascades rather than one tall waterfall, set in West Iceland. Water seeps out from beneath the Hallmundarhraun lava field and spills over the porous rock into the Hvítá river, stretching for nearly a kilometre. Because the water emerges from cracks in the lava, the falls take their name from the lava itself. They lie right beside Barnafoss, so the two are usually seen together. Viewing platforms and paths are provided, and access is free. Paths can be icy and slippery in winter, and conditions are subject to local notice.
