Introduction

Runde is Norway's most famous bird island: from April to August, hundreds of thousands of seabirds nest on its cliffs, and the real star is the Atlantic puffin. A causeway connects the island to the mainland, and a hike of an hour or two reaches the west-cliff viewpoints where puffins whir past with beaks full of sand eels. Add a lonely lighthouse and the legend of the Akerendam — a Dutch treasure ship whose gold coins washed ashore after its 1972 discovery — and you have a pilgrimage site for birders and hikers.
