Aksla Viewpoint atop Mount Aksla (or 418 steps up) offers the classic panorama of Ålesund's islands, fjords and colourful architecture.

Atlanterhavsparken sits on the coast at Tueneset, a former naval base about 3.6 km from Ålesund's centre. Seawater is pumped straight from the Atlantic, unfiltered, into its tanks. The star exhibit is the four-million-litre Atlantic Tank, viewed through a tunnel beneath it as cod and halibut glide overhead. Outside, otter island, the seal pool and Humboldt penguins get regular feeding shows. Ideal for families.

Alnes Lighthouse stands at the western tip of the fishing village of Alnes on Godøy island, about a 30-minute drive from Ålesund. Fishermen first lit the site with four candles in 1852; today's red-and-white wooden tower dates from 1937 and stands 22 metres tall, fully automated since 1982. Climb the spiral stairs for Atlantic views, then try the home-baked 'lighthouse cake' in the old keeper's cottage café. Open May to October.
