The Akerhus Viewpoint, located on the Akerhus cliff on the Nesodden peninsula near Oslo, Norway, is an excellent spot to overlook the Oslo Fjord and the city skyline. The viewpoint sits at an elevation of about 140 meters, with the cliff dropping vertically to the fjord, offering an open view of downtown Oslo, the Bygdoy peninsula, and the Holmenkollen ski jump. Alnes Lighthouse stands on the westernmost tip of Godoy island near Alesund, braving the North Atlantic. Climb the spiral wooden stair for 360-degree views over the crashing Atlantic and the silhouettes of Godoy and Giske islands — spectacular in storms. The keeper's cottage is now a cosy cafe famous for its freshly baked lighthouse cake with black coffee, the classic Norwegian coastal fika. Runde is Norway's most famous bird island: from April to August, hundreds of thousands of seabirds nest on its cliffs, and the real star is the Atlantic puffin. A causeway connects the island to the mainland, and a hike of an hour or two reaches the west-cliff viewpoints where puffins whir past with beaks full of sand eels. Add a lonely lighthouse and the legend of the Akerendam — a Dutch treasure ship whose gold coins washed ashore after its 1972 discovery — and you have a pilgrimage site for birders and hikers.

In January 1904 a fire all but erased Ålesund; within a few astonishing years the town was rebuilt in the fashionable Art Nouveau style, leaving Norway's densest concentration of decorative façades. The Norwegian Centre for Art Nouveau occupies a beautifully restored former pharmacy, telling the story of that destruction and rebirth through interactive displays and recreated period rooms. Climbing the tower for a view over the city's turrets, spires and curving brickwork is the perfect way to begin reading this remarkable town.

Tucked into a historic building in the old town, the Ålesund Museum pieces together the full memory of this fishing city through photos, models and artefacts: images of the town before and after the 1904 fire, the hard years of the German occupation, and the cod fisheries and shipping that kept Ålesund prosperous for over a century. The galleries are compact but clear, and after visiting you will read the city's streets with new eyes.
