Alnes Lighthouse

Introduction

Alnes Lighthouse stands on the westernmost tip of Godoy island near Alesund, braving the North Atlantic. The first light was lit by local fishermen in 1852 — with four candles; the present red-and-white wooden tower dates to 1937, stands about 22 metres tall, and went automatic in 1982. Climb the spiral wooden stair for 360-degree views over the crashing Atlantic and the silhouettes of Godoy and Giske islands — spectacular in storms. The keeper's cottage is now a cosy cafe famous for its freshly baked lighthouse cake with black coffee, the classic Norwegian coastal fika. Open May to October; the wind off the sea is real, so bring a jacket.
