Introduction

Troldhaugen was the home of Norway's greatest composer, Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), built beside a lake just outside Bergen in 1885. The pale wooden villa, the tiny lakeside composing hut and a modern concert hall together form a complete memorial: most of Grieg's best-loved works were written in that one small room facing the water, and visitors still stand at the same window today. In summer, a pianist performs his music in Troldsalen at lunchtime most days — a pilgrimage for any classical music lover.
