Introduction

São Bento Station in central Porto opened in 1916 on the site of a former Benedictine monastery. It is famous for the large tile panels in its vestibule, designed by the painter Jorge Colaço, which use tens of thousands of blue-and-white azulejos to depict historic battles, rural customs and the development of transport—a masterpiece of Portuguese tile art. A major railway hub, it is the departure point for trains to the Douro Valley and the Minho region. Close to Rua das Flores and Avenida dos Aliados, it is a convenient base for the old town.
