Introduction

Little Venice is the canal quarter of Maida Vale in north-west London, about a ten-minute walk north of Paddington station. Here the Grand Union Canal meets the Regent's Canal in a broad pool known as Browning's Pool, said to be named after the poet Robert Browning, who once lived nearby. Willows shade the water and colourful narrowboats - many painted with the traditional roses-and-castles motif - are moored along both banks. Towpaths lead south-east to Paddington Basin and the Little Venice market, and north-east towards London Zoo and Camden. Every May the Canalway Cavalcade fills the pool with hundreds of decorated boats, the capital's liveliest waterway festival.
