Introduction

The Circus is another Georgian masterpiece in Bath—a circle of elegant terraced houses with the Royal Crescent, a pinnacle of Bath's harmonious, elegant architecture. The Circus (circus meaning a circular square) and the Royal Crescent are peaks of 18th-century Georgian Bath, close and complementary. Built in the 18th century, it is three curved Georgian terraces forming a complete circle—over thirty honey-colored stone houses around a central circular green with tall old trees. The facade uses Doric, Ionic and Corinthian orders from bottom to top; the cornice has hundreds of different stone carvings. Three roads radiate out. With its circular layout and refined detail, paired with the crescent Royal Crescent, it represents the height of Bath's Georgian town planning and architecture, the essence of the World Heritage city. Strolling the Circus is a not-to-be-missed Bath sight.
