Introduction

Westminster Abbey stands in central London just west of the Houses of Parliament and is one of Britain's foremost Gothic religious buildings. The present church dates largely from the thirteenth century and was enlarged over the following centuries into a complex of nave, choir, cloisters and chapels. Since 1066 it has been the setting for royal coronations, weddings and funerals, and many monarchs, scientists, writers and statesmen are buried or commemorated here. The interior is noted for its ribbed vaulting, stained glass and carved stone, with the fan vault of the Henry VII Chapel especially admired. Visits usually begin at the west door and pass through the nave, choir, royal tombs and Poets' Corner. As a working church, some areas may close for services or events; times are subject to on-site notices.
