Introduction

The Flecker Botanic Gardens form the core of the Cairns Botanic Gardens and are named after Dr Hugo Flecker, a pioneering tropical medicine doctor and botanist. On Collins Avenue in Edge Hill, Cairns, they are widely considered the best formal tropical botanic gardens in Australia, bringing together palms, gingers, orchids, bamboos, vines, aroids and tropical fruit trees — including a rare specimen of the Amorphophallus titanum, one of only two in Australia. Admission is free; across Collins Avenue a Rainforest Boardwalk winds through remnant coastal rainforest, while the historic Fitzalan Garden also forms part of the grounds.
