About 15km west of Cairns in the Redlynch area, Crystal Cascades sits in a pocket of serene wilderness where Freshwater Creek drops in a series of cascade stepped down a rocky face, forming spans of natural swimming pools and crystal-clear plunge pools enveloped by tropical rainforest. From the car park a paved, roughly 1.2km walk runs alongside the cascades past picnic and barbecue areas to a main-falls viewing platform, and is wheelchair- and pram-friendly for most of its length. The area is free to enter and a hugely popular local swimming haunt, though after heavy rain or in the wet season waters can rise fast and some pools are off-limits for swimming.
