Introduction

Herberton Historic Village is Queensland's largest private collection of Australiana, located in the town of Herberton on the Atherton Tablelands. In the 1950s collector Harry Skennar began rescuing colonial-era buildings and relics that were being demolished or sold as scrap metal; from 1973 he moved the first building, Elderslie House, to the banks of the Wild River, and the village opened to the public in 1977. It was forced to close in 2003 due to rising public-liability costs, then revived in 2008 when Craig Kimberly, founder of the Just Jeans clothing chain, and his wife Connie took it over. Sprawling over some 6.5 hectares, the open-air village reassembles more than 40 original relocated buildings re-creating shops, schoolhouses, a hospital, post office and more.
