Introduction

Rabjerg Mile is Denmark's largest migrating dune, on the east coast of Jutland about 15 km south of Skagen. Covering roughly a square kilometre and rising some 40 metres, the whole dune creeps northeast about 15 metres a year, buried fences, vegetation and even an old road in its path — geology in motion. From the ridge, one side is a sea of rolling sand, the other endless pine forest and blue coastline, the dune's shape rewritten by every gust. Nearby stands Den Tilsandede Kirke, the church buried by drifting sand in the 18th century, only its tower above ground — together they make a two-act drama of nature's power. The sand is soft going; bring slip-off hiking shoes and summer sun protection.
