Grenen is the northernmost tip of Jutland and of mainland Denmark, reached on foot from Skagen along the sand. Here the Kattegat and Skagerrak seas collide head-on, raising a visible white line of breakers that runs down the beach. A small 1963 lantern-style lighthouse marks the point. In spring and summer grey seals haul out on the sandbars nearby. Come with windproof layers, even on sunny days.

Skagens Museum houses masterpieces of the Skagen Painters, artists known for luminous seaside light and fishing village life, a key to understanding this artistic town.

Råbjerg Mile is Denmark's largest moving dune, an hour's drive south of Skagen. The dune covers roughly a square kilometre, rises about 40 metres, and creeps northeast at around 15 metres a year, steadily burying vegetation and old tracks as it goes. Climb the ridge for views over sand that runs all the way to the coast, and stop nearby at Den Tilsandede Kirke, a medieval church swallowed by sand in the 18th century whose tower still pokes above the dunes. Loose sand makes it hard work; wear shoes you can shake out.

Grenen is Denmark's northern tip where the North Sea and Baltic Sea meet in clashing waves — a unique sandspit you can walk between two seas.

Skagen's town centre keeps its yellow-walled, red-roofed fishing-village charm with timber houses, shrimp markets and colourful boats.

Danish Route 40 is a rural highway in northern Jutland running up toward the Skagen peninsula, stitched together by dune plantations, heathland and coastal fishing villages.
