Temple of the Condor

Introduction

The Temple of the Condor is one of the most evocative structures in Machu Picchu, tucked among boulders at the eastern end of the urban sector. The temple uses a natural rock outcrop as its body: sloping wing-shaped slabs and a carved groove on the ground together trace a condor with spread wings — in Andean cosmology, the condor is the god of the skies between earth and the divine. The stone pit beneath is read as either a prison or a ritual chamber, steeped in mystery. Reaching it means descending steep, often slick Inca steps with rope handholds and climbing back up. Stand before the condor's carved head, and stone, sky and belief overlap — the purest window into Inca nature worship.
