Plaza de Armas (Plaza Mayor) of Lima is the historic center and birthplace of Peru's capital. Founded in 1535 by conquistador Francisco Pizarro, with a central bronze fountain, surrounded by the Cathedral, Government Palace, Archbishop's Palace and City Hall, and as the core of Lima's World Heritage historic center, it is Peru's most important colonial square and the starting point of Lima's history. Planned by Pizarro in 1535 — "Plaza de Armas" was the standard central square of Spanish colonial cities, surrounded by the most important buildings. A 1650 bronze fountain stands at center. To the east is the Cathedral of Lima (1535-1772) — Pizarro is buried here; to the north the Government Palace (presidential) — daily changing of the guard at noon; to the south the Archbishop's Palace and City Hall. The square and surrounding buildings are part of the "Historic Centre of Lima" World Heritage (1991). At night, lights illuminate the facades — a pleasant time to stroll. Islas Ballestas are a group of small islands off the Paracas National Reserve, Peru. These rocky islets, sculpted by wind and waves over millennia, are known as "Poor Man's Galapagos" for their dense seabird colonies, sea lions, penguins and dolphins, plus the enigmatic El Candelabro geoglyph en route — a classic day trip on Peru's Pacific coast. A ~2-hour speedboat tour from Paracas port first passes the giant Candelabro geoglyph carved into a sand cliff (~180 m high, origin a mystery, related to the Nazca Lines), then reaches the islands. Wind-and-wave erosion has formed natural arches, caves and bridges. Dense seabirds include cormorants, pelicans, gulls and Peruvian boobies — guano deposits are tens of meters thick; 19th-century guano brought Peru enormous wealth. Sea lions, Humboldt penguins and marine iguanas also inhabit the islands; dolphins often accompany the boat. Visiting to experience seabirds darkening the sky and rich marine ecology on Peru's Pacific rocky islets is a stunning, unique South American coastal experience.

Qorikancha ("golden enclosure") was the most important religious temple of the Inca Empire in Cusco, Peru. Once lined with gold plates and dedicated to the sun god Inti, it was dismantled by Spanish conquistadors who built the Santo Domingo convent on its foundations — today the precise Inca stone base with a Spanish Baroque church atop is the best witness to Inca and colonial history intertwined. In Inca times, Qorikancha was Cusco's holiest site — walls and floors covered in gold, a garden with gold animals, plants and corn, dedicated to Inti, Mama Killa (moon goddess) and the lightning god. After the conquest, gold was plundered, the temple dismantled, and Santo Domingo built on the precise Inca stone base. After the 1650 earthquake, the church was rebuilt but the Inca walls stood intact — Inca masonry's precise polygonal fit still astounds engineers. A small Inca solar observatory is in the courtyard. Visiting to feel two civilizations collide and intertwine in Inca precision beneath Spanish Baroque is a stunning, profound historical experience in Cusco.

Machu Picchu, the 15th-century Inca lost city, rides an Andean ridge about 80 km northwest of Cusco, Peru, at roughly 2,430 metres, wrapped in cloud forest. The city follows the mountain's contours: temples of mortarless masonry — the Temple of the Sun, the Intihuatana and the Temple of the Three Windows — have survived centuries of earthquakes without a crack, and more than 200 structures spread across terraces and stairways until the outside world rediscovered it in 1911. On clear mornings, when the mist lifts, the whole stone city seems to float above the Urubamba river gorge. A New Seven Wonders site and UNESCO jewel, it enforces named, time-slotted entry with daily caps — book tickets and trains weeks ahead.

Lake Titicaca is a highland giant on the Peru–Bolivia border at 3,812 metres, the largest lake in South America and the highest navigable lake on Earth. The Uros floating islands are woven from reed, and Taquile's inhabitants still keep Inca weaving alive. Between water and distant mountains lies a living museum of millennial Indigenous lake life, and in Andean belief the lake of creation itself.

Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain) is one of Peru's most stunning natural wonders. At ~5,200 m, mineral deposits create seven-color stripes — red, yellow, green, white — like nature's palette.
