📍 Destination Overview
Cusco, on the Andean plateau at about 3,400 metres, was the Inca capital, 'navel of the world' in Quechua, now a UNESCO city and gateway to Machu Picchu. Spanish colonists raised churches on Inca foundations, so grand cathedrals beside the Plaza de Armas stand next to seamlessly fitted walls and the famed twelve-angled stone, while Sacsayhuaman's giant blocks command the hillside.

Historic Ruins & Heritage

Rainbow Mountain
Vinicunca, better known as Rainbow Mountain, is a 5,200-metre peak in Peru's Cusco region whose slopes glow with stripes of red, gold, green and lavender. The colours come from oxidised mineral layers of iron, sulphur and copper exposed by erosion. The hike from the trailhead takes one to two hours, with llamas and alpacas grazing along the way; horses can be hired from local herders. Go in the dry season (April to October) for the clearest views, with the snow-capped Ausangate peak rising behind it.

At about 3,400 m altitude, altitude sickness is common on arrival—move slowly, drink water, avoid strenuous activity, and acclimatize first in the Sacred Valley.
