Heart of the Inca valley — terraces, ruins & the Machu Picchu road

📍 Destination Overview

Urubamba, highland town in Peru's Sacred Valley, sits on the Urubamba River between Cusco and Machu Picchu, gateway to the Inca lands. Small yet central, it links the valley's gems: the terraced Pisac ruins upstream and Ollantaytambo, the Inca fortress and train start for Machu Picchu, downstream. Milder than Cusco, it eases acclimatising before an early-morning train.

Urubamba is best in the May–October dry season, with clear skies ideal for ruins and hiking; the rainy season is lush but showery. Base yourself in the town and spend 2–3 days threading the Sacred Valley: a day at Pisac's fortress and terraces plus the Chinchero craft market; a day downstream to Ollantaytambo's great stone fortress with the Maras salt pans and Moray's circular terraces along the way; and an early train or bus to Machu Picchu on another morning. Lower and milder than Cusco, the valley eases altitude adjustment. With park limits, book Machu Picchu entry and trains well in advance. Terraces, salt pools and millennia of stonework make the Sacred Valley the most stirring chapter of the Inca world.
