Innsbruck is the capital of the Austrian state of Tyrol, set in the Inn Valley and embraced by the snowy Alps. Famous for hosting the Winter Olympics twice, it is a world-class ski capital. In the center of the old town, the Golden Roof is covered with over two thousand gilded copper tiles, a splendid legacy of Emperor Maximilian. The Nordkettenbahn cable car reaches snow peaks over two thousand meters above sea level directly from the city center, overlooking the whole valley and city. The fantastical Swarovski Crystal Worlds, the treasures of Ambras Castle and the Bergisel Ski Jump each have their charm. With alpine hiking in summer and skiing in winter, Innsbruck blends imperial splendor with the grandeur of the Alps.
