Plain of Jars Site 1 (Thong Hai Hin)📍 Phonsavan
The largest and most accessible jar site on the plain. About 300 stone jars lie scattered across the plateau, some over 3 m tall and weighing several tonnes, carved from sandstone, granite and limestone 2,500-3,000 years ago for reasons still unknown. A visitor centre and the UXO Lao clearance exhibit explain the bombing history of the province. The Plain of Jars joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2019.

Muang Khoun Old Capital Ruins📍 Phonsavan
The ruins of Muang Khoun, the old capital of Xieng Khouang and one of the most sobering historical sites in northern Laos: the town was all but erased by the Haw bandit raids of 1887 and the intensive bombing of the Indochina wars. What remains includes the 30 m That Foun stupa, the broken walls of Wat Phia Wat and French colonial shells scattered among the rice fields.

The best first stop in town. Exhibits run from the archaeology of the Plain of Jars — excavated jars and tools — through the dress and daily objects of the Hmong, Khmu and other upland peoples, to photographs and hardware from the unexploded-ordnance clearance effort during the Indochina wars. Visit before the sites and the jar mystery plus the bombing history fall into place.

Plain of Jars Site 2 (Hai Hin Phu Salato)📍 Phonsavan
Jar groups on two wooded knolls. Fewer jars than Site 1, but far better atmosphere and very few visitors — the best place to feel the plain as it was found. Access is by dirt road that turns muddy and is sometimes closed in the rainy season. Combine it with Sites 1 and 3 on a single hired-car day.

Plain of Jars Site 3 (Hai Hin Lat Khai)📍 Phonsavan
A hilltop jar site with views over the surrounding farmland, right beside the Hmong village of Ban Sieng Di, making it a natural pairing with a village walk. It is the furthest and roughest of the three, best attempted in the dry season; the road passes rice fields, bamboo and upland hamlets, giving it the richest scenery of the group.
