Introduction

The largest and most accessible jar site on the plain. About 300 stone jars lie scattered across the plateau, some over 3 m tall and weighing several tonnes, carved from sandstone, granite and limestone 2,500-3,000 years ago for reasons still unknown. A visitor centre and the UXO Lao clearance exhibit explain the bombing history of the province. The Plain of Jars joined the UNESCO World Heritage list in 2019.

✨ Highlights

1
Over 300 jars in one field
About 300 jars cluster here, the tallest over 3 m — the most striking field on the whole plain.
2
UXO Lao clearance exhibit
Unexploded ordnance and clearance equipment on display, with panels explaining the province modern history.
3
Visitor centre panels
Covers dating, the competing theories (burial, water storage, ritual) and the digs since the 1930s.
4
Half-buried and leaning jars
Some jars are buried to the rim, others tilt sharply — the clearest evidence of 2,000 years of ground movement.
5
Lids and tool marks
Original lids and chisel marks survive; close up you can tell sandstone from granite.
6
Plateau rice-field panorama
The site sits on a slope with open views over terraced rice fields and distant ridges in the dry season.
