Introduction

The ruins of Muang Khoun, the old capital of Xieng Khouang and one of the most sobering historical sites in northern Laos: the town was all but erased by the Haw bandit raids of 1887 and the intensive bombing of the Indochina wars. What remains includes the 30 m That Foun stupa, the broken walls of Wat Phia Wat and French colonial shells scattered among the rice fields.

✨ Highlights

1
That Foun stupa
The square stupa, about 30 m tall, is the most intact structure to survive the destruction.
2
Wat Phia Wat ruins
Only walls and a base remain, but the brickwork of the original temple is still legible.
3
French colonial shells
Walls and arched windows of colonial-era buildings lie among the rice fields.
4
A bombed royal capital
This was among the most heavily bombed areas of the Indochina wars; the ruins are the evidence.
5
Quiet ruins among paddies
Unfenced and shared with villages and fields, the site has a restrained, silent atmosphere.
6
Same day as the jar sites
30 km from Phonsavan, it fits naturally into one hired-car day with Sites 1, 2 and 3.
