Housed in the yellow former army barracks of Cuartel Bellavista, built at the end of the 19th century, the National Museum stands where Costa Rica took its sharpest historical turn: on 1 December 1948, José Figueres Ferrer symbolically abolished the military here, and the bullet holes from the civil war still pockmark the fortress turrets. Inside, galleries trace the country from pre-Columbian cultures through the colonial era to independence, while the courtyard displays carved Diquís stone spheres — near-perfect granite balls whose makers and purpose remain a UNESCO-listed mystery. A small butterfly garden adds a living wing to the visit.

Arenal Volcano is Costa Rica's most famous, photogenic volcano, known for its near-perfect symmetrical cone about 1,670 m high, towering beside La Fortuna and a top ecotourism landmark. Once among the world's most active volcanoes, it erupted violently in 1968 after centuries of silence and then erupted, flowed lava and glowed red at night for decades—spectacular. Since 2010 it has been in a relatively calm dormant phase; though no longer flowing lava, its perfect cone, the surrounding nature (geothermal hot springs, dense rainforest, waterfalls and lakes) and rich ecotourism keep Arenal one of Costa Rica's most popular destinations. Visitors hike Arenal Volcano National Park through ancient lava fields and rainforest formed by cooled lava flows, viewing the perfect volcano from different angles; on clear days the cone is grand (though often cloaked in cloud, a bit of luck is needed for the full view). With its perfect cone, rich hot springs and activities, Arenal is a must-see Costa Rican nature and travel destination.

Teatro Nacional de Costa Rica is San José's most magnificent cultural landmark. Completed in 1897 in Neobaroque style, with marble staircases, gold-leaf decoration, ceiling murals and crystal chandeliers, it is considered one of Central America's most beautiful theaters and the highest temple of Costa Rican culture and art. The theater was funded by a coffee export tax — the late 19th-century coffee boom brought wealth and ambition to this small Central American nation. Modeled on the Paris Opéra, the Neobaroque building features Corinthian columns, a pediment and dome, with imported Italian marble stairs, 24K gold-leaf, ceiling murals by French painters and a grand crystal chandelier. The main auditorium seats ~1,000; the Salón de los Cafeteros on the third floor has murals depicting coffee history. The theater remains home to the National Symphony Orchestra. Visiting to feel the cultural ambition of the coffee-boom era in a hall of marble and gold is an elegant, dignified cultural experience in San José.

Poás Volcano holds one of the world's largest active crater lakes, its waters a dreamlike blue-green, ringed by high-altitude cloud forest. Trails allow close views of the crater and steam vents.

The Pre-Columbian Gold Museum sits beneath San José's Culture Plaza and houses a large collection of Indigenous gold work, jade and stone artifacts, systematically showcasing Costa Rica's pre-Columbian metalcraft and belief systems.

La Sabana Metropolitan Park is San José's largest urban green space, converted from a former airport into the city's central park. With lakes, trails, a stadium and museums, it is the heart of local jogging, cycling and recreation.
