Tromso Travel Guide

A Norwegian city inside the Arctic Circle — chase the aurora in winter and bath in the midnight sun in summer.

📍 Destination Overview

Tromso, on an island about 300 km north of the Arctic Circle, is northern Norway's largest city, dubbed the Gateway to the Arctic. In the aurora zone it offers superb Northern Lights from September to March, while from May to July the midnight sun keeps the sky bright. The iceberg-shaped Arctic Cathedral is its landmark, and whales can be spotted offshore in winter.

Midnight Sun
The sky that never darkens on summer nights.
Dog Sledding
The polar world in winter.
Tromsø lies inside the Arctic Circle and is the gateway to chasing the aurora and experiencing the polar region. The long dark nights from about September to March of the following year are the best season for the aurora (you need clear skies and to drive to the outskirts or go out to sea); from about May to July there is the midnight sun, bright all night. Winter is extremely cold with polar nights, so be sure to dress warmly with proper gear. Don't miss the iceberg-like Arctic Cathedral, the cable car overlooking the whole city, winter whale watching, dog sledding and Sami culture.
