Plaza de Armas
The Plaza de Armas in Querétaro, officially named the Plaza de la Independencia, lies at the heart of Querétaro's historic center and is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Latin America. Surrounded by colonial mansions dating from the 17th and 18th centuries, the square features cobblestone streets lined with outdoor restaurants and cafés. At its center stands a fountain topped with a statue of Juan Antonio de Urrutia y Arana, Marquis of Villar del Águila, who financed the construction of the iconic aqueduct that brought water to the city. Locals affectionately call it the "Plaza de los Perros" (Dog Square) because of the four stone dogs at the fountain's corners, with water streaming from their mouths. Adjacent to the square is the historic Casa de la Corregidora, a key site in Mexico's independence movement. Today, the Plaza de Armas remains not only a testament to Querétaro's rich history but also a vibrant gathering place for both residents and visitors alike.
