Tucked beside the municipal cemetery of the silver-mining city of Guanajuato, the Museo de las Momias is Mexico's most macabre museum. Between 1865 and 1958, families who could not pay the burial tax had their relatives exhumed from the Panteón de Santa Paula, and the region's dry mineral-rich soil had naturally mummified many bodies. Around 111 remain, displayed in glass cases still wearing clothes, shoes, and even baptismal gowns. The first on view was a French doctor, Remigio Leroy, exhumed in 1865. This unsettling collection has haunted writers, artists like Diego Rivera, and filmmakers for generations.
