Introduction

The Alhóndiga de Granaditas is a late 18th-century grain store in Guanajuato that became, in September 1810, the site of the first major battle of Mexico's war of independence: Father Hidalgo's insurgents besieged the Spanish holding out inside, and the miner known as El Pípila, shielded by a stone slab on his back, set fire to the door and let them through. After the reversal the Spanish executed Hidalgo and three other leaders and hung their heads at the building's four corners for years. It now houses the Guanajuato regional museum, with murals by Chávez Morado in the stairwell.
