Introduction

Cristo Rey del Cubilete stands on the summit of Cerro del Cubilete near Silao in Guanajuato state, at about 2,600 m, and is treated as a symbol of Mexico's geographic centre. The present bronze figure is some 20 m tall, built between 1944 and 1950 to replace a first statue destroyed during the religious conflict of the Cristero War in the 1920s. Christ stands with arms level and palms forward, flanked by two angels bearing a royal crown and a crown of thorns. Large numbers of pilgrims walk up each year, and the summit opens out over the Bajío plain.
