📍 Destination Overview

Guadalajara, Mexico's second-largest city and capital of Jalisco, is the birthplace of tequila and mariachi music, whose charro-suited bands play each night in the Mariachi Plaza. No.1 Guadalajara
Instituto Cultural Cabanas
The Instituto Cultural Cabañas stands in central Guadalajara, begun in the early 19th century as a hospice for orphans and the poor, designed by Manuel Tolsá with vast patios and Neoclassical façades. Repurposed as a cultural institute, it is celebrated for the murals by José Clemente Orozco—above all 'El Hombre de Fuego' (Man of Fire) in the chapel dome—a visual epic of the Mexican Revolution. A UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2004, it is essential for understanding Mexican muralism and public art.

Tequila
Tequila is a small town in Jalisco named for the spirit it gave the world, surrounded by fields of blue agave on volcanic soil. In 2006 the 'Agave Landscape and Ancient Industrial Facilities of Tequila' became a UNESCO World Heritage Site, recognising centuries of cultivation, roasting and distilling. Visitors enter centuries-old distilleries (e.g. La Rojeña) to follow the journey from agave heart to amber liquor, climb lookouts over sword-like fields, and taste an authentic blanco or añejo in town. For understanding the soul of Mexico's national drink, it is a pilgrimage.

Teatro Degollado
Teatro Degollado is Guadalajara's cultural emblem, built in the 19th century with a Neoclassical facade and a golden dome fresco. One of Mexico's premier opera houses, it hosts ballet, opera and symphony year-round.

Templo Expiatorio
The Templo Expiatorio del Santísimo Sacramento in Guadalajara is a neo-Gothic church begun in 1897 and not finished until 1972, seventy-odd years in the building. Raised block by block in stone, it handles pointed arches, flying buttresses and rose windows by the Gothic book, with stained glass from Italian workshops and intricate mosaic flooring. The tower carries a mechanical clock from which carved figures of the twelve apostles emerge in turn at set hours — a local fixture. It is often called the finest neo-Gothic building in Mexico.

Basilica de Zapopan
The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Zapopan, in Zapopan within the Guadalajara metropolitan area, was begun in the 17th century and holds a small 16th-century image of the Virgin made from maize pith. Venerated as the patroness of Jalisco, she is carried back from Guadalajara cathedral to Zapopan each 12 October in La Romería, a procession followed by hundreds of thousands and among the largest religious gatherings in Mexico. The façade is baroque, fronted by a broad open square.

Guadalajara Zoo
Guadalajara Zoo is built into the walls of the Huentitan canyon on the northern edge of the city, with ninety hectares terraced into animal habitats, and ranks among the best zoos in Latin America with some 360 species and over 1,500 animals. Its distinction is that the canyon's drop becomes the exhibit: the safari bus, included with admission, crosses African-savanna-style enclosures where giraffes, rhinos and zebras move against the cliff face, the most photogenic part of the visit. Walking trails then link big cats, the Monkeyland primate area, the Herpetario reptile house, a nocturnal animal building and an aquarium, with a panoramic train, bird and reptile demonstrations, and a Skyzoo gondola that needs an upgraded package. The collection centres on African savanna animals, big cats, primates and reptiles, and the zoo shares the address Paseo del Zoologico 600 with the Selva Magica amusement park on the canyon's northern edge. Tickets start at MXN 130 for adults and MXN 90 for children aged 3-11, with Premier and Diamante packages adding rides and the gondola; pay in local currency by cash or card. Open Tuesday to Sunday 10:00-18:00; the site is large and hilly, so allow three to five hours and come in the morning when the animals are most active.
