Introduction
The Basílica de Nuestra Señora de Zapopan, in Zapopan within the Guadalajara metropolitan area, was begun in the 17th century and holds a small 16th-century image of the Virgin made from maize pith. Venerated as the patroness of Jalisco, she is carried back from Guadalajara cathedral to Zapopan each 12 October in La Romería, a procession followed by hundreds of thousands and among the largest religious gatherings in Mexico. The façade is baroque, fronted by a broad open square.
