Mazatlán is a Pacific coast resort city in Mexico's Sinaloa state, with a population of about 500,000, at the southern tip of the Mazatlán peninsula. Founded in 1531, named after Nahuatl for "deer place," becoming a Pacific port and shrimp fishing centre in the 19th century. The Malecon boardwalk is the most iconic attraction, about 8.5 km, one of the world's longest waterfront promenades, with sculptures, restaurants and ocean views. Old Mazatlán colonial old town is the most charming district, with cobblestone streets, colonial buildings and Plaza Machado. Angela Peralta Theater is a 19th-century opera house, named after Angela Peralta (Mexico's nightingale). Mazatlán Cathedral is the most iconic church, with Neo-Gothic twin towers. Plaza Machado is the old town central plaza. Port of Mazatlán is a shrimp fishing port. Stone Island is the most famous beach, with white sand and palms. Playa Olas Altas and Playa North are city beaches. Playa Cerritos and Playa Bruja are northern beaches. Isla de la Piedra is a fishing village across from Stone Island. Isla de Venados and Isla de Lobos are nearby islands. El Faro de Mazatlán is the highest lighthouse at about 145 metres, one of the world's highest. Mazatlán Archaeological Museum and Art Museum are museums. Carnival is an annual February event, Mexico's third-largest carnival, with parades, fireworks and street parties. Pacifico Brewery and Osuna Brewery are local beers. Shrimp is the most famous cuisine, with shrimp tacos, aguachile and ceviche. Mazatlán International Airport serves the city. Ferry to La Paz connects to Baja California. The climate is tropical wet and dry, with hot humid summers (33°C) and warm dry winters (28°C), rainy season June to October. Mazatlán blends Malecon, Old Mazatlán, Stone Island and shrimp, forming the Pearl of the Mexican Pacific and shrimp capital.
