The Doge's Palace was the seat of power and gorgeous palace of the former Republic of Venice. This pink-and-white palace blending Gothic and Renaissance styles, famed for its fine facade, gorgeous halls and the Bridge of Sighs, witnesses Venice's former glory, a gorgeous sight. The Doge's Palace stands beside St. Mark's Square, by the water, the former doge's residence and highest authority of the Republic of Venice (seat of government and court). For centuries as Venice ruled the seas, this was the power center, witnessing Venice's glory. The palace itself is a gorgeous architectural masterpiece: mainly Venetian Gothic with Renaissance elements, its waterside facade is unique and beautiful, two tiers of graceful, open pointed-arch arcades below, above a wall of pink-and-white marble diamond patterns, light, gorgeous and elegant, reflected in the water. Inside, the halls are extremely lavish: grand halls decorated with huge paintings by Titian, Tintoretto, Veronese and other masters (like the Great Council Hall holding one of the world's largest canvas paintings), showing the republic's wealth, power and taste. Behind the palace, the famous Bridge of Sighs connects the former prison, telling another story.
