Noravank, in the Amaghu Valley of Armenia's Vayots Dzor province, is one of the country's most spectacular medieval monasteries, set in a red sandstone canyon. Built in the 13th-14th centuries with Orbelian patronage, its red stone blends into the cliffs. Its two churches are famous for fine reliefs, notably showing God holding Jesus's soul, a masterpiece of Armenian medieval art.
