Introduction

Museo Casa Diego Rivera occupies Positos 47 in Guanajuato's historic centre, the house where the muralist Diego Rivera was born in 1886 and spent his early childhood. The 19th-century colonial townhouse keeps its ground floor furnished as a prosperous provincial household of the period — furniture, kitchenware and family portraits — setting out the domestic world behind the artist who would later recast Mexican public art on enormous walls. The upper floors serve as galleries holding close to a hundred original works: early sketches, academic studies, paintings from his European years and the experiments that preceded his mural style, alongside rotating shows of contemporary Mexican art. Visitors climb a narrow, steep colonial stair from the period rooms to the galleries, with an interior courtyard offering the quietest corner of the house. The reward is not only the paintings: the building makes concrete how a provincial child became the author of a national visual narrative. Guanajuato's old town, a World Heritage site since 1988, puts the museum a few minutes' uphill walk from the Jardin de la Union.
