Lake Powell

Introduction

Lake Powell straddles the Arizona-Utah border, an artificial reservoir formed by Glen Canyon Dam on the Colorado River. After the dam was completed in 1963 it took 17 years to fill to full pool. The lake stretches about 299 kilometers with more than 3,000 kilometers of shoreline winding through red sandstone canyons, and is the second-largest reservoir in the United States after Lake Mead. Called an inland sea in the desert, its turquoise water against vermilion cliffs makes it a premier destination for boating, kayaking, fishing and water recreation. Rainbow Bridge National Monument, one of the world's largest natural bridges, can be reached by boat. Marinas and campgrounds at Wahweap, Bullfrog and other sites serve visitors, and nearby Horseshoe Bend and Antelope Canyon from Page are often combined with a Lake Powell visit. The lake showcases the dramatic Colorado Plateau landscape shaped by water.
