Glen Canyon Dam Overlook

Introduction

The Glen Canyon Dam Overlook, located near Page, Arizona, offers an excellent vantage point above the Glen Canyon Dam to view this magnificent engineering project and Lake Powell, America second-largest artificial lake. Built between 1956 and 1966, the 710-foot-high dam is the second-tallest concrete arch dam in the United States, after Hoover Dam. The dam blocks the Colorado River to form Lake Powell, which extends 186 miles and holds the second-largest reservoir volume after Lake Mead. From the overlook, the dam curved concrete wall rises between canyon walls, with the rushing Colorado River below and the blue Lake Powell surface above, creating a spectacular blend of engineering and nature. The bridge atop the dam connects both shores, one of the few spots for close-up full dam views. The visitor center provides detailed exhibits on dam construction history, engineering principles, and Colorado River basin ecology.
