Introduction

The Navajo Village Heritage Center near Page, Arizona is a living museum dedicated to the traditional life and spiritual culture of the Navajo people. Operated by a Navajo family, the center presents the ancient ways of the Dine, as Navajos call themselves, with authenticity and respect. Visitors step inside an octagonal hogan and sweat lodge, listen to Navajo elders recount creation myths and sandpainting ceremonies, and watch demonstrations of weaving, silversmithing, and pottery. The most moving segment is traditional dance and song, with performers in velvet and deerskin regalia dancing to drumbeat, conveying the deep connection between the Navajo and their land and seasons.
