Introduction
Sera Monastery stands on Sera North Road in Chengguan District, Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, and is one of the three great Gelug monasteries of Lhasa, built against the hillside on a grand scale. It consists of several colleges and many halls, with white and red walls alternating with gilded roofs, and its halls enshrine Buddhist statues and preserve murals and scriptures. The name Sera means wild rose in Tibetan, and legend says the hills were covered with wild roses when the monastery was founded. It is famous for the monks' debates, often held in the debate courtyard in the afternoon, where monks clap and question each other in a lively scene that offers a window into monastic life. Please follow the designated routes, respect religious customs and the monks' routine, and ask permission before taking photos.
