Introduction
The Potala Palace stands at 35 Beijing Middle Road in Chengguan District, Lhasa, Tibet Autonomous Region, built on top of the Red Hill and ranking as Lhasa's most iconic landmark. Its name derives from the Sanskrit word for Mount Potalaka. The palace rises along the hillside with tiered halls, and its main body consists of the Red Palace and the White Palace, with red and white walls creating a majestic appearance. Inside, it preserves a large number of murals, thangkas, statues and scriptures, making it an important place to learn about Tibetan Buddhist art and Tibetan architecture. Visitors climb a designated route of steps and can overlook the city of Lhasa and distant mountains along the way. Because of the high altitude, it is wise to walk slowly, take regular rests and confirm reservation and opening arrangements in advance.
