Introduction

Opened as a natural-history museum in 1953 and in its present building since 1981, the Kagoshima Prefectural Museum sits at the foot of Shiroyama on the ruins of Tsurumaru Castle. Dioramas and specimens recreate the prefecture's 600-kilometre north-south natural span — from Sakurajima's volcano and Amami's subtropical forest to Yakushima's vegetation — and explain the farming, fisheries and mineral resources it supports. The first floor holds the entrance display and fauna/flora shows, the second a nature gallery and hands-on room, the third industry exhibits and a 3D theatre; an annex houses dinosaur fossils and a planetarium. Permanent displays are free, making it a strong rainy-day or family stop.
