Introduction

The Arimura Lava Observatory stands on a hill of the 1946 Showa-eruption lava on the east shore of Sakurajima, in Arimura-cho, Kagoshima City — a free, all-round viewpoint. A roughly 1-km lava trail crosses the black rock with 360-degree views of Sakurajima's Minami-dake plume, Kinko Bay and the Kirishima range; the two roofed shelters of the north deck are the trail's finest stop, where NHK's Taiga drama 'Segodon' poster was shot, and two rock-shelter bunkers line the path.
