Introduction
The Arima Toys & Automata Museum sits at the heart of the Arima Onsen town, directly opposite Kin no Yu, a few minutes from Taiko Bridge. Its director has gathered more than four thousand toys from around the world, but the real stars are automata: spring-driven mechanical figures made mainly in Germany and France in the nineteenth century that write, smoke, play music or perform a chain of tiny movements when wound, with wooden joints and cams more impressive up close than at first glance. The rest is arranged into European antique toys, music boxes, Japanese folk toys and a hands-on zone where many pieces can actually be operated with staff guidance, so the place reads as a workshop you can play in rather than a glass-case collection. Photography is allowed inside as long as it does not disturb others, contrary to older guides claiming a general ban. Admission is JPY 1,000 from junior high age, JPY 500 for ages three to primary school and free under three; hours are 10:00-17:00 with last entry 16:30, sometimes opening earlier or closing later in peak seasons, with irregular and shortened days. Outside are Kin no Yu, Gin no Yu and Yumotozaka, so pairing the museum with a bath is the natural day; there is no museum car park, and the Kobe Electric Railway or the Arima Onsen bus is the easier approach.
