Introduction
Nunobiki Herb Gardens spread across the hillside behind Shin-Kobe Station at about 400 metres. A five-minute walk from the station reaches the ropeway base, then a ten-minute ride climbs to the summit; the ride is half the experience, crossing Nunobiki Falls, one of Japan's hundred famous waterfalls, with Kobe's streets and harbour opening out behind you. Twelve themed gardens hold some 200 species and 75,000 herbs and flowers: tulips and roses in spring, lavender and sunflowers in summer, cosmos in autumn, plus a glasshouse, a herb foot bath and an observation plaza over the port. At the top, The Herb Dining serves seasonal set menus and the reopened The Veranda Kobe pairs a herb burger with the terrace view. The gardens are reachable only by ropeway, with no car park, and service stops in high winds, thunderstorms and annual maintenance periods.
