Introduction

Kitano Ijinkan is not a single building but a hillside district; the main table pointing it at the Kobe Kitano Museum is a case of mixed records. After Kobe opened as a port in 1868, the foreign settlement ran short of space and merchants and diplomats built Western-style houses up the slope; ijinkan simply means those foreign residences. Some twenty survive around Kitano-cho and Yamamoto-dori, a dozen or so open to visitors, and the area is a national Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings. The first thing to understand is the ticketing. Walking up Kitano-zaka to see red brick, clapboard, bay windows and balconies, or stepping into the free Rhine House, costs nothing; you only pay to enter houses with furnished interiors and collections. The Weathercock House (1909, the German merchant Thomas's home, with its brickwork and rooftop vane) and Moegi House (1903, US consul Hunter Sharp's residence, pale green with a second-floor sunroom) are Important Cultural Properties run by the city, JPY 500 each or JPY 800 together. Uroko no Ie, Yamate House No. 8 and the English House belong to the Uroko group, with 3-house, 4-house and 7-house passes at JPY 1,540, 2,200 and 3,300; the 7-house pass does not cover the first two, and the two systems cannot be combined. On a first visit, choosing two houses and walking slowly beats racing through a big pass: climb Kitano-zaka from Sannomiya in the morning, stop at a house cafe at midday, then descend to Nankinmachi and the harbour. From October 2026 the Uroko group keeps uniform 10:00-17:00 hours, so older guides claiming summer closes at 19:00 are out of date.
