Introduction

Mount Yoshino in Nara's Yoshino-cho is a sacred mountain of Shugendo, founded by the ascetic En no Gyoja, and part of the UNESCO World Heritage 'Sacred Sites and Pilgrimage Routes in the Kii Mountain Range' since 2004. Its four zones — Shimo-, Kami-, Naka- and Oku-senbon — hold over 30,000 wild cherry trees that bloom from early to late April, earning it the fame of 'thousand cherry trees' and Japan's top hanami spot. Kinpusen-ji, Yoshimizu Shrine and Nyorin-ji dot the slopes; maples and fresh green are equally lovely, making it a walking sanctuary of nature, faith and history.
