Introduction
Kobe Animal Kingdom on Port Island, next to Kobe Airport, is an all-weather zoo and botanical garden themed on 'flowers, animals and people living together'. It opened in 2006 as Kobe Kachoen (flower-and-bird garden) and was rebuilt and renamed in 2014, adding mammals and rare species; today some 130 species and 800 animals share the grounds with a thousand kinds of plants. Roughly 70% sits inside vast glass greenhouses with no heavy bars — macaws fly overhead, capybaras and pygmy hippos wander beside the path. Feed a camel, ride a pony or catch a bird show: a top Kansai family pick, and perfect on a rainy day.
