Introduction
Southeast Botanical Gardens in Chibana, Okinawa City, opened in 1968 and ranks among Japan's largest outdoor botanical gardens, growing some 1,300 species and over 50,000 tropical and subtropical plants. The grounds split into a botanical garden and a water-park zone, with Japan's only Alexander palm avenue, lotus ponds and animal encounter areas where capybaras, squirrel monkeys and goats delight visitors. From late October to late May the Okinawa Southern Illumination turns the park into the island's signature night attraction.
