Introduction
Kitano Monogatarikan is a nationally registered tangible cultural property at the entrance of Kobe's Kitano Ijinkan district: a two-storey wooden Western-style house built in 1907, first owned by an American and later by a German baker who ran a ground-floor coffee shop. Damaged in the 1995 Great Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, its parts were stored and rebuilt on this site in 2001; since 2009 the ground floor has housed Japan's first Starbucks in a registered cultural property, while the upper floor displays district history and works by Western-style painter Masuzen Komatsu.
