Introduction

Kobe's busiest downtown district, Sannomiya, takes its name from this shrine. It is the third of eight branch shrines of Ikuta Shrine, numbered Ichinomiya through Hachinomiya, and enshrines Tagitsuhime, one of the three Munakata goddesses. Locals have long prayed here for safe voyages, thriving trade, road safety and wisdom. Its founding date is unknown, but the grounds hold a stone torii inscribed 1732 and a stone lantern donated by the Amagasaki domain lord in 1748. In 1868, Bizen troops clashed with foreign soldiers in front of the shrine: the Kobe Incident became the Meiji government's first diplomatic crisis, and a memorial stele and a cannon of the period still stand here, alongside a small shrine to the Kawara brothers of the Genpei War. Tucked between Daimaru department store and the shopping arcade, the compact precinct layers port history, medieval warfare and everyday worship.
